Okay true story…… The other day, my husband and I were having a conversation at our kitchen counter about the amount of bread our family eats in a week.  When all is said and done, we figured out that our family of five consumes a staggering 2-3 loaves of of bread each week! That’s a lot of store bought bread packed with unwanted preservatives that we are feeding to our kids.  So my husband asked why I don’t use my bread maker to bake fresh homemade bread anymore.

Well I guess he had totally forgotten that when we moved to our new home 5 years ago, my bread maker had been dropped and broken.  At the time I was heartbroken but with a new home and our third baby on the way, replacing my bread maker had been put on the back burner.

Why I Needed To Find The Best Bread Maker

This conversation got me thinking about my old bread maker and how much I loved making fresh loaves of homemade bread. The smell of fresh bread wafting through our house was so comforting and delicious. Nothing beats that smell!  And I remembered how awesome it was to make my own fresh pizza dough too.  Those pizzas were better than any store bought pizza I have ever eaten.

So I decided it was about time that my family was treated to fresh homemade bread again – without any yucky preservatives.  I knew that bread makers had probably come along way in five years so I needed to  do some research. I wanted to see how they had improved over the years and find just the right one for my kitchen.

What I Wanted In A Bread Maker:

One That Made Large Loaves

My old bread maker only made small 1 pound loaves (about 8 slices of bread) which wouldn’t be enough for my family now.  The bread machines that bake 2.5 pound loaves are better because this size loaf will yield about 20 slices of bread.

A Timer

I used this feature a lot.  It was wonderful to add the ingredients, go out for an afternoon and come home to a fully baked loaf of bread just in time for dinner.  A timer is a must!

Compact Size

I don’t have a ton of counter space or storage in my kitchen for another large appliance so a bread machine that is compact would be my first choice.

Why Panasonic Bread Makers Are The Best

After weeks of reading bread maker reviews, studying manufacturer’s websites and comparing several different models, I decided that the Panasonic SD-YD250 was the perfect model for my home and my family. It has all of the features that I was looking for plus much more.

Favorite Features Of The Panasonic Automatic Bread Maker:

  • It is compact and lightweight
  • It has a preset timer
  • Love the non stick pan
  • It automatically adds the proper amount of yeast
  • Lots of bake settings
  • AND it has no viewing window (I’ll explain why I like this feature in a moment)

Why Are These Features Important?

Well let me fill you in a little bit on why each of these features is important to me and why the Panasonic Bread Machine took the top prize.

The Bread, The Bread, The Bread

When buying a bread maker, it should be all about the bread. The size of the loaves, quality of the finished product and the choices you have when using your machine.  This bread maker has it all.

It has 4 bake settings that you can select depending on the type of bread you want to bake.  You can choose white bread, whole wheat, multigrain or French bread as well as pizza dough (A must for me and my family – it really is better than any store bought pizza crust!)

You can even choose the shade of the crust from light to dark – I prefer light crust but that’s just me.

I prefer the top loading design of this model and the fact that it bakes the bread vertically as opposed to horizontally.  Combine that with the extra large loaf capacity for loaves up to 2.5 pounds and I was almost sold right there! Almost…..

Timer & Other Features

Like I mentioned, a timer is a very important feature in a bread maker.  It is so delightful to come home from a cool afternoon walk to the smell of fresh baked bread.  Yummm……   Because you can preset the timer for up to 13 hours and because bread takes a while to bake –about 2-3 hours in rapid mode – you can plan to have it ready exactly when you want it.

And to top it all off, the Panasonic bread maker even adds the yeast for you.  You simply add the required amount of yeast to the small cup located inside the machine and it will add it to the dough at the perfect time.  What could be easier?  Bread machines really make baking bread a snap!

No Peeking!

This might sound strange but I really like that the SD-Y250 doesn’t have a viewing window. I am a rather curious and nosy person by nature so that tiny little opening in the top of my old bread machine always drew me in.  I couldn’t help peeking at my bread over and over again during the day.  I wanted to be sure it was baking properly and the crust was browning up beautifully.    I even went so far as to open the lid which is a huge no-no with a bread maker.

Besides, according to the manufacturer, the lack of a viewing window means that the heat inside the machine is reflected more evenly resulting in better bread.  So this missing feature is a very good thing for the bread and my curiosity!  I will just rely on the indicator light to let me know when my bread is finished baking.

Size Matters

If your kitchen is like mine then you probably already have lots of appliances that take up space on your counter or in your cupboards right?  Well, honestly I was really hesitant to add another large appliance to my already overstuffed kitchen.  But the Panasonic bread machine really is a great compact size.

It is 13.5″ wide by 14″ high and only 9″ deep which means it will easily fit in my appliance cupboard next to my griddle. And thankfully it only weighs about 15 pounds so lifting it in and out of my storage cupboard won’t break my back!

How Much Is It & Where Can I Get The Best Deal?

I have found that buying the Panasonic SD-YD250 through Amazon.com is the best option. Not only do they have a really competitive price to begin with, but they also offer free shipping with his machine for extra savings.  Compared to other online retailers, Amazon’s current price is definitely the best deal.

You shouldn’t expect to pay more than $150 for this bread maker.

Panasonic Bread Maker Reviews & Testimonials

I read tons of reviews about this bread machine and most consumers are raving.  On Amazon.com this bread maker has an overall rating of 4.5 out of 5 stars and over 600 reviews. It is one of the bestselling models this year.

Here are a few comments:

“The bread consistency is excellent”

“I’m thoroughly impressed with this machine”

“Works like a dream, mom loved it and the bread comes out very evenly cooked and smelling amazing!”

“The all whole wheat bread was fabulous.”

“It’s easy to use and gives consistent and delicious results.”

Complaints?

Although most of the reviews were positive, I did read a few that mentioned the noise that the bread machine makes.  Apparently, it is a bit too loud to have running at night.  If you have lower level bedrooms that are in close proximity to your kitchen, or you are a light sleeper, you may not want to have your bread baking throughout the night.

In case you were thinking of giving the Panasonic SD-YD250 Automatic Bread Maker as a gift, I made you this little video.  Hope you enjoy it!
