When you’re shopping for Mom for Mother’s Day this year, pick out something that not only does she not have, but something she may not even know exists. The best kitchen gadgets bring appeal to the room and are both useful and fun. People who love to cook and bake are always looking for that new toy to bring more to their kitchen experience.

Wonder Heart Waffle Maker

Does your mom have a big heart? She’ll appreciate the love that goes into choosing the Wonder Heart Waffle Maker. Set it up for her beside online flowers from FTD.com for a double “awww” moment. Plus, she’ll get to show a little love herself every time she makes these fun heart-shaped waffles. The non-stick baking plates make three waffles at a time and are simple to clean. For people who aren’t prone to sentiment, heart-shaped waffles may seem a little contrived, but mushy Moms will love this product. It’s available for $24 on the C Wonder website.

Takeya Fruit-Infused Water Maker

If Mom is looking to drink more healthy beverages, fruit-infused water can help her stay hydrated while also enjoying natural fruit flavor. The Takeya Fruit-Infused Water Maker features an airtight lid that seals in flavor. Its modern, stylish design makes it an attractive piece for the table. To create the fruit-infused water, add chopped fresh fruit and let it infuse for at least three hours or overnight. The water maker is durable, made of high-temperature acrylic and is available on the company website and online retailers, including Amazon.

Schiuma Milk Frother

If your mom loves spending time in coffee shops, the Schiuma Milk Frother can give her a coffee-shop feeling at home by adding freshly frothed milk to her favorite coffee beverages. It’s simple to operate: just dip into milk, push the power button and froth until the foam reaches desired thickness. It works with both hot and cold milk and is available on Schiuma’s website and at leading retailers. Five color choices make the Schiuma Milk Frother fit in well with most kitchens. You can buy it in black, silver, red, purple and lime green. The frother retails for $15.

Pandigital 15″ Kitchen Technology Center

If you’re looking to spend more money on Mom for Mother’s Day, a tech-savvy mom will find myriad uses for the Pandigital 15″ Kitchen Technology Center. The KTC packs the features of several devices into one, featuring an HDTV receiver, electronic recipe collection and digital photo storage, along with an Internet connectivity. It has a 15.6-inch HD screen and comes with three faceplates to choose from to match the colors of your Mom’s kitchen. Up to 2,400 digital images can be stored and displayed as single images or slide shows. This is a good choice for the Mom who enjoys working in the kitchen but likes to wander in and out to go on the Internet or watch TV. Pandigital products are available at leading online and offline retailers for about $299.

Hutzler Banana Slicer

Does your mom have a good sense of humor? She may appreciate the Hutzler Banana Slicer, a plastic banana-shaped cutter that slices a whole banana with one push. This product has sparked thousands of joke reviews on Amazon.com, where the slicer has become a cult favorite among reviewers. It may be a little silly since it’s pretty easy to cut up a banana with a knife, but it’s a fun conversation piece, and it does what it says it does: cut a banana. Plus, it’s cheap: $3.59 on Amazon.

Whatever you buy your mother, she’ll probably love it, because it’s from you.

Small Changes, Big Impact: DIY Kitchen Tips

The kitchen is a multipurpose space in our home dedicated to cooking, eating, entertaining and socializing. Since the kitchen is where we spend plenty of our favorite pastimes, its design should be not only be functional, but warm and inviting. If you’ve outgrown the look of your kitchen, small DIY upgrades and stylish renovations can significantly improve how you function in this space.

Lighting Replacements

Install new pendant light fixtures above your kitchen table and island. Pendant light fixtures are available in a wide range of of traditional and contemporary styles. Choose from extensive diverse options such as the colorful Pharos Modern Pendant Light (Niche Modern), unique Hand-blown Oculu Design Pendant Lamps (Niche Modern), charming Vintage Canning Jay Chandelier (LampGoods) and classic Bronze Funnel Pendant Light (Home Depot).

Rustic Accents

Home remodeling and design experts at Houzz.com suggest integrating rustic elements to create a warmer ambiance. Install custom wooden blinds for a distinctive and country home appearance. Distressed hardwood flooring will also create the organic feel of a farmhouse; laminate and vinyl hardwood flooring are low-budget options that can still aesthetically mimic the look of real wood. Houzz.com’s ideas include hanging copper pots and pans from a ceiling rack and pairing a kitchen bar or island with antique wooden stools.

Cabinet Refacing or Door Painting

Refacing your cabinetry or painting cabinet doors for a fresh look is a budget-friendly option for revamping your kitchen’s overall appearance. Remodeling the look of your kitchen with contrasting colors or textures can create a dynamic and stunning design. If your kitchen has a warm ambiance, then install dark chocolate natural wood or striking teal cabinet doors to become the aesthetic focal point. Another contrasting design idea is to paint the top and bottom halves of your kitchen two opposing colors. Mix beige with a dark blue-gray hue, white with a scarlet red, citrus with grapefruit pink or turquoise with sunshine yellow.

New Accessories

Upgraded kitchen accessories and tools can instantly change your kitchen’s appearance. Whether you hang organizational boards and racks on the wall to eliminate counter top clutter or swap out old hardware with stylish new handles and knobs, your kitchen will look fresh and made over.

  • Crate & Barrel Stackable Glass Storage Jars, Heritage Hill Glass Jars with Lids and Stainless Steel Clip Canisters are decorative storage solutions. Fill jars and canisters with spices, sugar, flour, pasta, candy, snacks or even wine corks to display on countertops.
  • Bowls and vases make eye-catching statement pieces. Place Pottery Barn vases in different shapes and sizes in kitchen corners and nooks. Accent vases with flowers, grass, wax fruit or themed ornaments such as seashells, acorns, holly or leaves.
  • Chalk board paint will not only add character but also function for your kitchen. Paint the doors of a couple cabinets or your freezer and refrigerator doors. Adorn your chalk board with a running list of groceries or inspirational quotes. Children will also love to use the new surface as a playful canvas for drawing.

Other fun kitchen accessories include a Williams-Sonoma Tuscany cookbook holder, Kamenstein Revolving Space Rack with 16 Filled Jars and a Chateau-Thierry or 1940s Garment Shop Clock from Restoration Hardware.

Sweet and Subtle Dining Room Tips

Dining rooms are nearly outdated, being overshadowed by dinners in front of the TV or everyone sitting down in the eat-in kitchen. Dining rooms are looked at as old fashioned and formal, and meant for more celebratory or important meals. Either because they are used solely for holiday gatherings and formal dinners or because drive-through dining is more your style, your dining room may be suffering. Mealtime should be a chance for families to strengthen relationships while savoring delicious food. If your dining room is uninviting, it is time to revamp the arrangement to ensure the only reason someone leaves is to scurry off and do the dishes.

Wall Décor

Use textured paint, colorful wall paper or do-it-yourself stenciling to liven up the walls in your dining room. For formal rooms opt for a deep jewel-colored paint or sea foam green with brown and gold accents. For a lighter look, rotate between several shades of blue or yellow. Paint is an easy and inexpensive way to update the look of a room. Instead of spending money on expensive custom wall paper, make a stencil of your own. Slip a picture of the design you want under thin sheets of plastic, trace the design, then cut it out with an exact-o-knife. Tape the stencil to your wall and begin painting.

Natural Lighting

Cheer up a dining room with natural and artificial lighting. Over sized curtains can broaden the room, making it appear larger and more spacious, while window shades can block out harsh afternoon sun rays. Use shapely light fixtures to add a pop of personality to the space, either dangling from the ceiling or propped against the wall. A unique fixture can be a statement piece that completes the room while lighting up the whole area.

A Splash of Color

Pair whites, neutrals and pale hues with a bold color to make the room dynamic and visually appealing. Fresh or faux flowers on the table, colored cloth napkins tucked under dishes or ceramic art displayed on a shelf can localize the room and force the eyes to focus on the details of the room. A plant or small tree can add the same effect while bringing a bit of nature indoors.

Mix Chair Styles

According to Heather Freeman from Houzz.com, “mixing chair styles in the same color is a safe way to get an eclectic mix while keeping a consistent look.” Don’t feel limited to only one table and chair style. Find a variety of styles you like and pair together what you think works. Bright blue chairs in a dark room can prevent the area from feeling too heavy while simple wire chairs can accommodate a smaller table without overpowering it.

Built-in Bar

Incorporate shelving or an open hutch into your dining area to store and display fancy dishes and decorations. Find something that has drawers or doors to store non-decorative items such as cloth napkins, place mats or seasonal dishes. A shelf or hutch can add depth to the dining room while utilizing the space for storage. For an extra pop, paint or glue wallpaper to the interior backing of a shelf or hutch. The change will bring displayed items out from the dark and into the spotlight.

Range Cooker Trends For 2013

The range cooker could very well be the last cooker you ever buy. Simply put, they are sturdy, flexible, built to last and can pretty much take care of all the cooking needs for a large family. Obviously, something this amazing doesn’t come cheap. With this kind of investment, it’s important to choose the right style that fits your kitchen. 2013 is right around the corner, which is why you we’re here to talk about a few of the styles and trends you might want to consider when thinking about your new range cooker:

Old school or new wave?

Almost a split decision when it comes to the classic, traditional look or a modern, contemporary style. According to a survey conducted over 4000 installations throughout the previous year, 51% favored a traditional designed range cooker. With the option of classic or modern being an even split. It seems that future kitchen aesthetic trends may be the deciding factor in which range cooker proves more popular in 2013.

Color coded

Previously, black was the most popular range cooker color. However, the trend for 2013 suggests that two emerging styles are going to be the way to go; stainless steel and cream. A traditional cooker in cream contributed almost 40% of range cooker sales in 2010/2011. It proved to be popular with the rustic, farmhouse design crowd. However, it’s emerging that a sleek, modern range cooker will be sought after in a professional steel finish come 2013.

Other colors such as your greens, reds and blues only accounted for around 10% of sales. It doesn’t look as though they will go beyond this within the next 12 months.

Technology

A representative of Britannialiving.co.uk stated that advanced features on range cookers were becoming more popular. The next generation of cooking tech such as induction heating is a trend that is on the rise, although many people still are not aware of its potential in the kitchen.

Sales and marketing director Henneke Duistermaat said: “Though induction cooking has been around for a while, we find that there is still a need to educate consumers on the benefits: safety, energy saving and controllability. We are seeing sales of induction range cookers continue to grow.”

2013 looks set to continue the balance between old styles and new, with emphasis on advancements in technology favouring traditional gas cooking.

Best Gourmet Coffee Maker For Your Home

Hope you’ve had the chance to read my latest review of what I think is the best gourmet coffee maker for your home, but if not, I’m going to give you the run down on which type of coffee maker I like best and why I think it is the ultimate way to bring the gourmet coffee experience into your home.

But first, let’s discuss what gourmet really means.  According to Wikipedia, the word gourmet is defined as “a cultural ideal associated with the culinary arts of fine food and drink”.  That’s a fancy schmancy way of saying that “gourmet” stuff is the really good stuff.

So when we talk about gourmet coffee makers, I am assuming it means we want a coffee maker that’ll make us a really good cup of coffee.  One that will make us feel like we are sitting in a cute coffee shop somewhere sipping an expensive cup of java.

So how do you get that gourmet experience at home without breaking the bank?  Easy…. All you need is a Keurig single serve coffee maker.   We have had ours for almost a year now and I can tell you first hand that it is a great way to enjoy gourmet at home.  Here’s my two cents:

  • Keurig machines use K-cups rather than a traditional paper filter and scoops of coffee.  K-cups are little mini-containers of ground coffee that come in a wide variety of flavors.  This means you can have whatever flavor you desire at any time of the day or night.  My husband’s favorites include Swiss Chocolate Almond, Crème Brulee and Butter Toffee.  All you do is pick your favorite K-cup flavor, pop it into the machine and you have gourmet coffee in a heartbeat.
  • Keurig B60 Single Serve Coffee MakerSingle serve machines are fast.  It only takes about 30 seconds to brew up a tasty and hot gourmet cup of coffee.
  • There is no clean up! For me, this is the ultimate luxury.  No more glass carafe to wash and no more ugly coffee stains to try and get rid of.  It brews the coffee right into your favorite mug and off you go.  How gourmet!
  • One of my biggest concerns with owning a Keurig one cup coffee maker was the inability to make a large pot when we had guests over.  That is no longer a concern.  Now when we have people over, we pull out the Keurig and set it up along side the K-cup carousel and let our guests choose their own flavors.  It is so much fun to watch my guests spin through the carousel to find their favorite flavor.  They ‘ohhh and ahhhh’ and they truly enjoy their gourmet single serve experience.

So how ‘bout you?  Do you have a favorite gourmet coffee maker?

My 10 Favorite OXO Kitchen Tools

OXO kitchen tools are like a trusted friend in the kitchen.  They are reliable, dependable and they’ll never let you down.   You can count on them when you need them most and they’ll never give away your secrets (like the time you licked the brownie batter bowl to a polished shine!)

So which of the many OXO tools are my favorites?  Here’s my top 10.

OXO kitchen toolsOXO Good Grips Cherry Pitter

I adore cherries.  Eat them by the handful.  But the pits are, well, the pits.  If only cherries could be eaten without them life would be good.  With this innovative cherry pitter, you can save yourself the embarrassment of looking like a trucker spitting your pits everywhere and easily punch them out into a bowl instead.

OXO Good Grips Salad Spinner

A good salad spinner is invaluable in the kitchen.  It washes and dries your lettuce with a few simple spins, is easy to clean and makes healthier eating easy and fun.  My kids love to help with this kitchen task so if you have little ones, let them spin the salad.  It’s one less thing for you to do at dinnertime.

OXO Steel Can Opener

I can’t even count how many can openers I have gone through over the years.  It can be hard to find a really good one that will stand the test of time.  I prefer steel can openers with chunky handles and rubber grips so it is comfortable to use as well as strong and durable.

OXO Good Grips Silicone Pastry Brush

I am so grateful for the invention of silicone (in the kitchen that is….).  And a silicone brush is a really handy tool to have in your gadget drawer.  I use mine for everything from brushing on glazes to saucing up hamburgers.

OXO kitchen tools

OXO Good Grips Cookie Scoop

I still remember the first time I saw someone use a mini scoop to measure out cookie dough.  I thought it was ingenious!  Now, these are a must have tool for any baking Mom.  Using a cookie scoop ensures that your cookies are all the same size so your whole batch bakes to an even golden brown.

OXO Stainless Steel Mixing Bowl Set

Another must have for the baker in the family.  A set of stainless steel bowls is essential.  They are easy to clean, look really professional, don’t retain smell or flavor and stack together for easy storage.  I use my stainless bowls every day – couldn’t live without ‘em.

OXO Good Grips Bottle Brush

My youngest baby is now almost four so it has been a long while since I have needed a brush for cleaning baby bottles, but when I did, this tool was a lifesaver.   Now I use it for things like canning jars and thermoses so it still gets the occasional workout.

Upright Broom & Dustpan

Okay so this one isn’t exactly a kitchen tool, but it is certainly a necessity if you cook and bake like I do.  Perfectly compact, this broom and dustpan can easily be stored near your kitchen for those quick clean ups.

Good Grips Dough Blender

When I use my dough blender, I pretend that I am a pastry chef in France somewhere making the most divine dessert.  Really I am just blending together some butter, brown sugar, flour and oats to make a topping for apple crisp but still… a girl can dream.

OXO Salt and Pepper Grinder

Everyone needs a good set of spice grinders.  They look professional and elegant and let’s be honest, everyone loves to twist them right?  They bring a restaurant-like feel right to your kitchen table.

So there’s my list.  Do you have any favorites to add?

Top Kitchen Gadgets Stores

I will admit it.  I am not like other women.  I am not a shopper.  I would rather do just about anything else to be honest.  But there are some stores that make my heart flutter.   The kitchen gadgets stores.  I just love ‘em.  Whether they are online or offline, these shops get my vote as the best way to spend a day shopping.

Offline shopping is great because I can browse through all the latest gadgets at my leisure.  I love to see them, touch them and give them a test drive.  I can get a good feel for their durability and inspect them for potential flaws.

But let’s be honest.  With three kids normally in tow, how much browsing can I actually do at my leisure? Not much.  So sometimes, shopping online is just a whole lot easier.  The good thing is most of the top stores offer online shopping as well so it really is the best of both worlds.

So here is the rundown of my top kitchen gadget stores for a fun day of shopping either online or off:

Brick and Mortar Shops

Chances are if you love to be in your kitchen cooking or baking you have probably visited at least one of these stores.  These shops are stocked full of cool and unique kitchen gadgets at reasonable prices.

Williams-Sonoma

With hundreds of locations across the U.S, this store carries many top-of-the-line kitchen products.  One of my favorite finds from this store was the copper kitchen ornaments to decorate the Christmas tree – so adorable.  Williams-Sonoma also has several outlet stores for extra savings.

Bed Bath and Beyond

For me, the Beyond part of this store is the best part.  Bedroom and Bathroom stuff just doesn’t float my boat, but the kitchen section is excellent.  I ordered Rachael Ray’s Brown and Bubble casserole dishes for my Mom last Christmas from this store.  BB&B is a fun place to spend an afternoon.

Crate & Barrel

This gadget shop is another one of my favorite places to waste away an afternoon.  Who needs a shoe store when you have kitchen stores like these?  I find the kitchen items at Crate & Barrel to be a bit more sleek and modern than some of the other kitchen stores that carry more traditional wares.  But sometimes, fun and funky is exactly what I am looking for.

Shopping Online

Sometimes spending the afternoon perusing the kitchen section of my favorite gadget store simply isn’t practical.  Take summer for example.  With my entourage of waist high helpers, perusing doesn’t exist.  Shopping becomes more like grab what I need and get out before someone has a meltdown or the boys start wrestling and things start flying off the shelves.

So for those times, I prefer to browse around online at these cool places:

Amazon.com

You can find just about anything at Amazon.com.  They carry everything from the most common kitchen essentials for cooking and baking, to wild and wacky kitchen products that make the perfect gift.  Although some find Amazon difficult to navigate, once you get the hang of it, shopping is a breeze.

Food Network Store

This is another online shopping site where you can find really unique kitchen stuff that you can’t get anywhere else… like celebrity chef kitchen products.   Did you see the knives featured on last week’s episode of Masterchef?  They sell those here and lots of other products from Rachael Ray, Paula Deen and many more.

There are so many other great kitchen gadgets stores out there.  Do you have a favorite?

14 Cup Cuisinart Food Processor – Beauty or Beast?

If you have been looking to buy a new food processor lately, chances are you have heard or read a lot about the 14 cup Cuisinart food processor.  Well I figured it was time to check it out to see if this full size food processor would be a benefit or a burden in my kitchen.

The reason I say that is because 14 cups sounds like a lot.  A lot of storage space required, a lot of space needed on my counter and a lot of stuff that perhaps I don’t need in a food processor.  Of course, I am slightly partial to smaller models of Cuisinart food processors, so I will try to stay unbiased on this one.
14 cup cuisinart food processor

Benefits of the Cuisinart 14 Cup Food Processor

After reading several reviews on this model, I can see why people really love this food processor.

  • It has a very powerful motor – 720 watts to be exact.  This size motor is perfect for mixing large batches of dough for pizza or bread and makes easy work of slicing, dicing, shredding and chopping just about anything.
  • The extra large work bowl can accommodate big batches of soup or dough so if you like to entertain or take part in once a month cooking then this model would be perfect.
  • The aesthetics of this model is very appealing to buyers.  With its sleek brushed chrome finish, many consumers commented that they loved how this food processor looked amongst their other chrome appliances.  This is definitely an advantage over  older models of food processors that normally only come in a basic white finish.

But Is a 14 Cup Food Processor Too Big?

The jury is still out on this one.  I think for my kitchen it might be a little too large to store or sit out on my counter.  I like my work space to be as uncluttered as possible because I tend to make a huge mess whenever I cook or bake.

cuisiant 14 cup food processorBut I do see the benefits.  A larger capacity bowl means more room for scalloped potatoes, shredded cheese and cabbage for yummy summer coleslaw.  And I have to admit that the brushed chrome finish is very attractive.

Price Comparison – 14 Cup Food Processor vs. 7 Cup Food Processor

If you are on a tight budget when it comes to buying a food processor, then I think the 7 cup food processor is more affordable without sacrificing much in the way of functionality.

If on the other hand, you are looking for a top of the line processor with a few more capabilities but still affordable (under $200 at Amazon.com), then the sleek 14 cup chrome food processor is the obvious choice.

The best part is, no matter which Cuisinart food processor you choose, you can feel confident in your purchase.  Cuisinart is one of the most trusted brands in kitchen appliances and with their lengthy warranties, you’ll be whizzing up goodies in your kitchen for years to come.
